Case Study

In relation to the subject in organizational design at the University of Southern Denmark, the book Burton and Obel “Strategic Organizational Diagnosis and Design” is used as a main part of the curriculum.

In classes the book’s structured walkthrough of the literature is used to map basic variables in organizational design. The design model of the book works as the fundamental model throughout the course. The software system OrgCon is used in practice sessions to train the students in diagnosing organizations with intent of suggesting design changes. These exercises work as virtual laboratory studies in management, where the students, with help from OrgCon, test and try out the theory from the book.

A central contribution from OrgCon is the ability for student to not only read and discuss theory with basis in qualitative cases but by using OrgCon has a support system in the decision making face. Especially the ability to construct and test different scenarios is a valuable contribution and is part of the reason organization design education of the University of Southern Denmark is more alive than with more traditional teaching material.

University of Southern Denmark

The University of Southern Denmark was formed in 1998 by the merger between Odense University, Southern Denmark School of Business and Engineering and South Jutland University Centre. The University is located in southwest Denmark and has campuses in Odense on the island of Funen, as well as in the cities of Kolding, Esbjerg and Sønderborg on the Jutland peninsula.

Research and teaching of students make up the core activities of the University. University of Southern Denmark also has widespread cooperation with the trade and industry of the region and considerable activities within continuing education.
